REAL ART TACOMA PRESENTS // PIG SNOUT // ASSERTION

Real Art Tacoma Presents:

Flyer.jpg

Pig Snout!! is Dahlia (drums, guitar, keys, vocals), Lucien (drums, bass, keys, vocals) and Justin Tamminga (guitar, drums, vocals). Pig Snout!! was formed in 2014, when Dahlia was 6 years old and Lucien was 8. The band was (and is) a bonding experience between a father and kids who all love music. Pig Snout!! is basically a project to help the kids learn the ins and outs of playing music and being in a band. They came up with their own band name, designed the logo and all art work, produced and put out their own cdʼs. They have worked with Ludwig, Gibson, Nordstrom, Amazon and have been featured in Nordstrom ads, Tom Tom Magazine, Seattleʼs Child, Band In Seattle and many more..

Assertion.jpg

Assertion is William Goldsmith (drums), Bryan Gorder (bass) and Justin Tamminga(guitar, vocals) After years of self-described music industry PTSD and disenchantment, drummer William Goldsmith (Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft, Foo Fighters) waspulled out of musical isolation through a shared connection with guitarist/vocalistJustin Tamminga (Blind Guides, Dying Trades) -- fatherhood."Justin had reached out to me via social media to say thank you because he wasinspired to play drums after listening to the song 'Seven' by Sunny DayReal Estate," says Goldsmith, "From there I discovered that he taught music tochildren which was inspiring in and of itself. I then found out that he developed atechnique of teaching drums to children with autism. His son Lucien is autistic. This really caught my attention since my son also has autism." Goldsmith wouldlater discover that Tamminga and his two children played in a band together calledPig Snout and was completely taken back by the deliberateness andcraftsmanship of the songs -- it would mark the first time in nearly a decadewhere he'd felt inspired to play music again. Assertion is best described adjectively. Real. Propulsive. Earnest. The band's debut record Intermission is complicated to categorize. Equal parts raw and cinematic, it is a cathartic experience that, proudly, does not nestle nicely alongside current bands -- or really many releases at all from the last couple decades. Intermission conjures more connections to the heady grit and soaring grind of the 90's. Driving guitars anchored by a frenetic rhythm section. A haunting vocal delivery concealing a heartfelt sentiment. Track-by-track, the record builds into a dark and heavy crescendo but unpredictably retreats into delicate and fragile moments in masterful ways.

From Rolling Stone -“If you know William Goldsmithʼs name, it's likely linked to one of the bands he played with in the Nineties — Seattle emo luminaries Sunny Day Real Estate, and a little group called the Foo Fighters. But Intermission, the debut by the drummer's new Tacoma, Washington, power trio Assertion, and Goldsmith's first release following a lengthy hiatus from music, shows that heʼs still a vital creative force. The bandʼs approach is familiar: passionate, post-hardcore–leaning indie rock that makes liberal use of quiet/loud dynamic shifts, in other words, a sound that wouldnʼt have been out of place in the heyday of Goldsmithʼs former bands. Its execution, on the other hand, is exceptional: Goldsmith, bassist Bryan Gorder, and guitarist-vocalist Justin Tamminga (whose best-known prior outfit is Pig Snout, an adorable band that's filled out by his kids) perform these nine cathartic songs with a rare fire and conviction. Tammingaʼs full, gorgeously organic production only ups the urgency. When the trio kicks into an anthemic gut-punch chorus like the one on “Defeated,” youʼll wish with every fiber of your being that you were howling along at a sweaty club gig. H.S.”
